The word is spreading about Fort Collin’s most recent restaurant addition, Maza Kebab.  This is not your typical gyro fast food joint, but Fort Collin’s own Afghani restaurant.  Always looking for a new place to eat, I was recently talking to some fellow Cupboard employees.  They said customers had been in that very day looking for the Afghani restaurant in Fort Collins.  Unlikely, I thought.  I promptly searched my phone to verify the truth or falsehood of this notion.  It was true!   A review popped up written by Kristin of Feasting Fort Collins about Maza Kabab, an afghani restaurant opened 4 months ago in Fort Collins.  Well, I had to go!  My husband and I headed directly to the unlikely location, behind Inca Mexican restaurant on College in the K-Mart plaza.  We found a bold red sign, a brightly lit simple interior, white walls and black tables.   We poured over the menu.  The owner, Sayed Sayied, gave us a few suggestions and we decided on the Afghani dumplings and the mixed kebab plate.  We also each started with a cup of chai.

When our food came, we were blown away.  This food was outstanding!  It was fresh, made from scratch, and absolutely delicious.  This is by far the best food I have tasted at a restaurant in Fort Collins.   The humble interior provides a simple back-drop for this food to shine…and keeps the prices very reasonable.  Entrees are about $8-13 each and worth every penny.  Each mouth watering bite, I was wondering how this restaurant ended up in Fort Collins.  The owner Sayed Sayied, came over frequently, checking in on how we liked the food, and beaming from ear to ear when we showered him with compliments.  He told us he had been in Fort Collins for over 20 years, escaping from Afghanistan in 1989.  I was so curious about his story, and found the rest of his tale, as well as a wonderful collection of his recipes in an article written in December in The Denver Post.  Don’t wait a minute longer to try out this amazing addition to the Fort Collin’s restaurant scene.  You will satisfy your stomach and provide support for Sayied’s dream of owning his own restaurant.
